My parents are quite attached to this little gopher. Last night I was out at their house, observing her first hand. She recently had a dozen babies, and when she got nervous that their home was not safe enough, she relocated the entire family in a hurried swarm across their yard to a safer area. It’s a story worth telling again and again.
Before the joys of motherhood fell upon her, she was a feisty little stealer of corn and nuts, defending her spoils against this ferocious alligator. Note how in the earlier pictures he stares at her intently, waiting for his chance to steal a bite, while later he no longer has this option.
And… a few days later. Note the slight but significant change to the alligator’s appearance. Up close, there are tiny tooth marks on the alligator!
